Few moments involving personal interactions at high-profile public gatherings could elicit an immediate visceral reaction quite like this one, in any description of American political spectacle. Such was the case last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference, when an uncomfortably awkward moment between former President Donald Trump and former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines took center stage in public discussion. A brief video of Trump leaning in for what appeared to be a kiss on the cheek, met by Gaines turning her head away, prompted a torrent of media commentary, speculation, and critique.
